Boquete vs. Coronado: which one fits your lifestyle?

Panama has many places to live, but when people get serious about making the move, most end up choosing between two: Boquete or Coronado. They’re the two most established expat communities outside the capital, with enough infrastructure to live comfortably.

The problem is they’re radically different. Choosing the wrong one isn’t a cheap mistake.

Boquete: the climate that changes everything

Boquete sits in the highlands of Chiriquí province, about 400 km west of Panama City. Its altitude (around 1,000 meters above sea level) produces the climate that put it on the map: cool year-round, between 15 and 24°C. Most houses don’t even have air conditioning — they don’t need it.

If you’ve spent decades in a tropical climate and the mere thought of year-round heat wears you out, Boquete solves that.

The expat community is well-established, with a significant North American presence. There are associations, volunteer groups, farmers markets, and an active social life if you want to participate. There are also decent restaurants, basic health services (Hospital Chiriquí in David is the regional reference), and an outdoor activity scene — hiking, coffee, rafting — that’s unmatched anywhere else in the country.

The number that matters: Renting a one-bedroom apartment in Boquete typically runs $400–$900 per month. A house with a garden can be $700–$1,500. Considerably lower than the capital or Coronado.

Boquete’s limitations: It’s a town of roughly 60,000 in the broader area, with the expat community concentrated in the Valle de Boquete. There’s no beach. Medical care at a specialist level requires traveling. For consular matters or complex medical procedures, you’re looking at a trip. Internet is good in the center but variable in more rural areas.

Coronado: beach within reach of the capital

Coronado is on the Pacific coast, about 80 km west of Panama City. The roughly 90-minute drive (in normal conditions) is what makes it special: it’s the first accessible beach from the capital, and that has driven significant development.

What Coronado offers is the combination of beach living with some urban convenience: supermarkets, restaurants, services, and an expat community with decades of history. Many who live there still work in Panama City and commute when they need to. Others use it as a primary residence and travel to the capital for what they can’t find locally.

The number that matters: Rent in Coronado runs $600–$2,000 per month depending on whether it’s a condo apartment or a standalone house. Condos with beach access, pools and private security are common and have an active market.

Coronado’s limitations: The heat. At 28–35°C for much of the year, it’s not the destination for someone escaping the tropics. The rainy season (May–November) brings high humidity and frequent rain. Medically, there are clinics, but serious cases go to Panama City. Internet is acceptable but inconsistent.

The key question: what do you actually want day to day?

The real comparison isn’t just about prices — though Boquete is usually cheaper — it’s about lifestyle.
